The ring allows control of SUB VFO frequency dial, VC-TUNE, Clarifier and C/S (custom select function). The MPVD is a handy dial that allows you to adjust important functions in ever-changing HF communications without taking your hand off the VFO. The dials are in better places now on the 710, for example. I like my FTDX10 but don't use all the features and wish it had better ergonomics, and was a bit cheaper. So the 710 sounds good. At least as good as a 7300. It's no hybrid but it is a newer SDR design. Only downside is Icom have superior menus in my opinion.
